120 mm Mortar Weapon System

Joining forces, Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH and Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH engineers have now mounted a 120mm mortar on a Wiesel 2 le lvb (leicht luftverladbar = light, airportable) weapons platform. Thanks to the systematic use of finite element analysis, a lightweight design and the selection of highstrength materials, the mortar system weighs just 310 kg. Building on the design of the already fielded 120mm “Tampella” mortar, RWM engineers employed highrigidity materials and strengthened the wall thickness in the part of the tube subject to the greatest pressure. This enables the mortar to fire roundsrecently developed in a parallel Rheinmetall project, attaining ranges of up to 8 km. The mortar tube, together with the cradle, recoil device and yoke are mounted to the platform vehicle on a pivot. Highly accurate and equipped with a recoil system, the new mortar is ideally suited to lightweight weapons platforms. Special sensors monitor the weapon function and status, keeping track of the tube temperature, firing position and recoil system stress. In typical mortar fashion, the ammunition is frontloaded and fired by a pressure-spring firing pin.
